Kitchen, bath, toilet, laundry and floor drains
Drain cleaning in York, PA
Drain cleaning clears the blockage and restores flow, usually with a cable machine run through the drain or a cleanout, and sometimes with a high-pressure water jet. If only one fixture is slow, the clog is in that fixture's drain. If several drains back up at once, the problem is in the main line, and that's covered on the sewer line repair page.
Water pouring or sewage backing up? Shut the main water valve, then call (717) 297-8733.
Emergency stepsSigns you need drain cleaning
- Water draining slowly from a sink, tub or shower, and getting slower
- Standing water in the tub after a shower
- A toilet that needs two flushes, or rises close to the rim before draining
- Gurgling from a drain after water runs elsewhere
- A sour or sewer smell from a sink or floor drain
- Water backing up into the laundry tub or a floor drain when the washer empties
Where the problem shows up tells you where the clog is:
| What you notice | Where the clog usually is |
|---|---|
| One bathroom sink is slow | Hair and soap in the stopper or trap |
| The tub or shower is slow | Hair caught at the drain or just past it |
| The kitchen sink is slow or backs up | Grease and food buildup in the kitchen branch line |
| A toilet clogs but other drains work | The toilet trap or its branch line |
| The laundry tub or floor drain backs up when the washer drains | The main line, or the laundry branch near it |
| Several fixtures on different floors are slow at once | The main drain or sewer line. See sewer line repair |
What causes clogged drains in York homes
- Grease and food in kitchen lines
- Hair and soap scum in bathroom sinks, tubs and showers
- Wipes, including ones labeled flushable, and paper towels in toilets
- Lint from washing machines, especially in laundry tubs without a lint trap
- Scale and rough pipe walls in old cast iron, which catch everything else
- Small objects: toys, bottle caps, and dental floss picks
Cleaning old cast iron drains in York's older houses
About half of York City's homes were built before 1940, and many houses of that age still drain through their original cast iron stacks and branch lines. Inside, decades of use leave cast iron rough with scale and rust, and the bottom of horizontal pipes gradually thins. That matters for drain cleaning in two ways:
- Clogs come back faster. A rough pipe wall catches grease and paper that would slide through a smooth plastic pipe, so a line cleared with a cable alone may slow down again within months.
- Aggressive cleaning can damage weak pipe. A badly corroded section can crack under a heavy cable or a high-pressure jet. In older homes, a plumber should match the method to the pipe, and if a line keeps clogging, a camera can show whether the cast iron is near the end of its life.
Drain cleaning methods: snaking, hydro jetting and camera inspection
Plunging and trap cleaning
For a single sink or tub, the trap is often removed and cleaned by hand, and the stopper cleared of hair. It's quick and doesn't put a machine into the pipe.
Drain snaking with a cable machine
A rotating steel cable with a cutting head is fed through the drain, a cleanout, or a toilet. It breaks up or retrieves the blockage. It's the standard method for most clogs, and different heads are used for soft clogs, grease, and roots.
Hydro jetting for grease and buildup
A high-pressure water jet scours grease, scale and debris off the inside of the pipe and flushes it downstream. It cleans the full diameter of the pipe, which a cable doesn't, so it's useful for recurring kitchen line clogs. It's not right for every pipe; badly deteriorated cast iron may need a gentler approach.
Drain camera inspection
If a drain keeps clogging, a small camera run through the line shows whether there's a sag, a broken section, or roots. That tells you whether more cleaning will help or the pipe needs repair.
Final check
The plumber runs water through the cleared line long enough to confirm full flow, and checks for leaks at any trap or cleanout that was opened.
How much does drain cleaning cost?
Drain cleaning cost depends on where the clog is, what's causing it and the method used; a hair clog in one sink is quick, while hardened grease or a line that needs hydro jetting or a camera inspection takes more time.
- Where the clog is and how it's reached. A clog reached through a basement cleanout is quicker than one that requires pulling a toilet or going through a roof vent.
- What's causing it. Hair or a soft clog clears fast. Hardened grease or a foreign object can take longer.
- The method. Hydro jetting costs more than cabling but cleans more thoroughly.
- Pipe condition. Fragile old pipe may need a slower, gentler approach.
- Whether a camera inspection is needed for a recurring problem.
- Timing. A visit outside normal hours costs more than a scheduled one.
When a clogged drain is an emergency
Most single-fixture clogs can wait for a scheduled visit. Treat it as an emergency if:
- Sewage or dirty water is coming up through a floor drain, tub, or lowest toilet
- Every fixture in the house is backing up
- A toilet keeps overflowing and the shutoff valve behind it won't stop it
- The only toilet in the house is unusable
Until it's cleared, stop running water. Don't run the washer, dishwasher or showers.
How to prevent clogged drains
- Wipe grease out of pans into the trash before washing them.
- Use hair catchers in tubs and showers.
- Flush only toilet paper. Wipes go in the trash, even "flushable" ones.
- Put a lint trap on the laundry tub drain hose.
- Pour a bucket of water into seldom-used basement floor drains every few months so the trap doesn't dry out and let sewer gas in.

Drain cleaning FAQs
Should I use a chemical drain cleaner first?
It's better not to. Chemical cleaners rarely clear a real blockage, they can damage old metal drain pipe, and they leave caustic water in the line for whoever opens it next.
A plunger, or pulling hair out of the stopper, is worth trying. If you've already used a chemical, tell the plumber.
Why does my kitchen sink keep clogging?
Grease. It goes down as a liquid with hot water, cools, and coats the pipe a little at a time until food scraps catch on it.
In older homes the kitchen drain often runs a long horizontal distance to the stack, which gives grease more room to build up. Hydro jetting removes the coating; a cable only punches a hole through it.
Is a garbage disposal bad for my drains?
Not if it's used properly with plenty of cold water. Fibrous scraps like celery and onion skins, coffee grounds, eggshells, rice and pasta are the usual culprits in disposal-related clogs.
How often should drains be cleaned?
There's no fixed schedule for most homes. Clean a drain when it's slow. A kitchen line that clogs every year or a main line with roots is worth cleaning on a schedule before it backs up.
